Spent a lot of time on this, probably way too much. Been redoing the background at least three times, and could never get it right. But thanks to some excellent tutorials (especially ~Statross's excellent all-in-one space tutorial!) I finally got a background that I felt did the piece justice. All the ships are done in Bryce, explosions, engine glow, stars, planets and nebular-looking thingie all done in Photoshop. I must admit, I'm especially proud of the explosions.

try using some different textures and if necessary make them yourself in photoshop. For example my piece here --> [link]
the texture for the wood on the tikki hut was made in photoshop. The textures are just detailed enough where they match at the same complexity.
I would suggest in this piece you either make the background simpler or make the textures on the models more detailed.
